Dining Out :: HAVE YOU TRIED
HAVE YOU TRIED
-- Jennifer Christman
Some things you've just got to share -- those dishes and deals that are so super, super cheap or super strange, you just have to talk about them. Have you tried... ... the stuffed pizza at Damgoode Pies? For just a little more dough ($1 extra for a 6-inch pie, $3 for a 10-inch, or $5 for a 14-inch ) you get twice as much filling and a top layer of crust that's frosted with even more sauce. It's like the difference between a single-layer and a double-layer cake. The staff advises that getting a Stuffy works better if you choose flat ingredients (roasted garlic, Canadian bacon, ham, pepperoni, red onions, spinach) instead of chunky ingredients (smoked chicken, meatballs, pineapple, artichokes). And you'll have to wait a little longer to dig in, because a Stuffy takes longer to bake than a single-layer pie. Damgoode Pies, (501) 664-2239, www.damgoodepies.com, phone number and Web site serve all three locations: 2701 Kavanaugh Blvd., 6706 Cantrell Road, 10720 Rodney Parham Road. -- Karen Martin ... the wonderfully weird Chicken Walnut Salad at Julie's ? Take a chicken-salady concoction with walnut pieces and coconut. Under that, put Mandarin orange slices. Under that, put fruit chunks and a bed of shredded lettuce. At $7.99, it's the perfect diet salad. It comes with lemon cream dressing on the side... and it tastes good with the salad as well as the delicious date-nut bread that accompanies it. Julie's, 110 S. Shackleford, Little Rock, (501) 224-4501 -- Helaine R. Williams ... Healthy Heart selections at Jason's Deli? I like the food at Jason's Deli, but the place scares me. As many times as I've gone, I still haven't figured out where I'm supposed to order, what I'm supposed to get (a ticket? a number? sometimes both?), and when I'm supposed to get my food (sometimes it's served right at the counter and sometimes it comes out to the table). But one thing I know is what to order, based on the helpful little heart icon denoting lower-calorie and lower-fat items (note: they are not particularly lower-sodium, however). Two heart-y faves: The Spinach Veggie Wrap ($5.25), a bundled fresh assortment of spinach, homemade pico de gallo, guacamole, sprouts, mushrooms and asiago cheese with a side of picante sauce; and the admittedly salty Turkey Reuben ($5.99), featuring 98 percent fat-free oven-roasted turkey breast, sauerkraut, low-fat Swiss cheese, spicy brown mustard, grilled on rye bread and served with fresh fruit, Baked Lay's chips or steamed vegetables. Jason's Deli, 301 N. Shackleford Road, Little Rock, (501) 954-8700 ; 4209 E. McCain Blvd., North Little Rock, (501) 945-7700, www.ja sonsdeli.com.
