ASU up-tempo as classes startWednesday was the first day of classes for ASU but the Indians did not go without practicing. The 90-minute practice left Coach Joe Hollis happy especially about the energy on the field. "I really enjoyed watching our practice. We were up-tempo, it was condensed, but we got a lot of work done and I liked the tempo of our practice," Hollis said. Senior running back and Doak Walker Award candidate Jonathan Adams was invited to be a participant at the Hula Bowl on Feb. 2, 2002. The Hula Bowl is a postseason bowl game where college seniors can display their talent to pro scouts. Robert Kilow, a former ASU standout who plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had that opportunity last year. Missing practice Wednesday were quarterback Mark Wallace; defensive back LaKeith Grace; wide receivers Mark Hamilton and Neil Bounds (strained hip), who is expected back Monday; running backs Tracey Whitaker and Danny Smith, who will be available for limited practice on today; linebacker Curt Barfield, who was sick and is expected back Thursday; offensive linemen Burt Samples (knee),who will be available on Monday and Tab Slaughter, who will be ready for limited practice today. -- Democrat-Gazette Staff and Press Services
