Arkansas State ready to scrimmageAfter one day in full pads, Arkansas State is ready to conduct its first scrimmage. "We're going to do some situation scrimmages Wednesday," said Coach Joe Hollis, who added the scrimmage will last less than 45 minutes. "It will be our second day in pads and we feel like we need to give everyone some situation scrimmage looks, especially our young quarterbacks." In addition to the quarterbacks, Hollis said his staff has several players trying different positions in the offensive line. "We've looked at Jesse Duncan some at center and guard, we're working John Crossley at tackle and guard and Brandon Crocker at tackle and guard," Hollis said. "We just find that it's that time of year where we can move some people around and see how they work together." He singled out the efforts of 6-3, 335-pound freshman Steven Gibbs of Bartlett, Tenn. Trainer Ron Carroll said X-rays on receiver Mark Hamilton's foot revealed only a bruise, but Hamilton was kept out of both practices. Freshman Alfredo Maldonado also was absent with a strained hip, while running back Sanchez Scherer suffered a pinched nerve and receiver James Hickenbotham sustained a lower back strain. Hollis said junior college linebacker Shane Tolleson has left the team for personal reasons. -- Democrat-Gazette Staff and Press Services
