ASU women add Messer to basketball staffSytia Messer, a former standout player for the University of Arkansas, has joined the Arkansas State women's basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach, Lady Indians Coach Brian Boyer said ThursdayMesser, a member of Arkansas' 1998 Final Four team and the Most Valuable Player of the West Regional, said she was excited to get an opportunity to coach at the Division I level. "I want to become a head coach one day at a Division I program and this is a great opportunity for me," she said. "Basketball has given me so much and I just want to give back. It's given me character and discipline and I want to instill those characteristics in other players." Boyer, who is in his second season as head coach at ASU, has had an opening on his staff since Surina Dixon left after one season to take the head coaching position at Maryland-Eastern Shore in June. Messer is seventh on the Lady Razorbacks' all-time scoring list with 1,379 points, 11th in rebounds with 603 and was a team captain as both a junior and senior. She holds the school record for consecutive games played and most games played at Arkansas with 128.
