THE REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS
Geography:
Located in the central North Pacific Ocean, mid-way between Hawaii
and Australia, the Marshall Islands atolls are formed by coral that
has grown upon the submerged remnants of ancient volcanos. Strings
of narrow islands and islets form around a shallow lagoon.
Status: Independent nation currently in
the Compact of Free Association with the United States.
Size: 70 square miles of lande spread over
30 atolls and 1,152 islands and islets that cover 750,000 square
miles of ocean.
Population: About 58,000.
Legal tender: U.S. Dollar.
Median age: 19.6 (2004 estimate).
Life expectancy: 69.7 years.
Literacy: 93.&% (15 and over).

Ethnic makeup: Almost entirely Micronesian.
Official language: English, There are two
major Mashallese dialects form Maloyo-Polynesian family.
Economy: Based on agriculture and tourism.
Received about $48.3 million in U.S. aid in 2003.

Climate: Hot and humid; wet season May
to November.
Notable: The highest point of the island
are only a few feet about sea level in most cases.
